This was a sample pencil page drawn for IDW publishing a year or two back. I'd heard that they were having a hard time finding people to draw Transformers and thought I'd take a shot at it. I also heard they had gotten the GI Joe movie license and on the next page of I was going to try and throw of that in--to "kill two birds with one stone". But about that time I got a request from another editor to produce a few pages "on spec", and so dropped this--never to return to it. The difficulty in producing sample pages is that after 20+ years your enthusiasm begins to wane if no one at a particular publisher is willing to pay you to draw material that you have no emotional attachment to. However from the publisher's point of view too much emotional attachment to a character or franchise means that a freelance may be difficult to work with.

Anyway, I'm still kind of proud of the Frank Kelly Freas quote in the last panel. And I can see why the company was having difficulties finding anyone to draw Transformers.

As per other works of this type--I was never paid for this so it's still copyright James E. Lyle, but as it is a licensed property, no prints will be offered.
